item: candleholders (two)

catalog #: 218

height: 13"

principal wood: banksia

accent woods: walnut base with purpleheart spacer

comments:  Banksia has a very rich red-brown color and prominent, rather irregular, grain structure. As the grain is cut through from various directions and angles, a wide range of figuring appears, much of it with the effect of great depth and opulence. The wood, which comes from Australia and New Zealand as short billets, is rather prone to splitting when released from the wax coating in which it is shipped. The results are well worth the risk! The dark brown walnut base is separated from the banksia body by a quarter inch of purpleheart. In this environment the purpleheart, usually a bit flamboyant on its own, is subdued and blends well with its surroundings. The candle sockets are lined with copper and the slim base-to-body connection is internally reinforced to strengthen the small-area glue joints. I call this set "The Sisters."
